So where did my love of walking come from, well...
My love of walking stems back to my early childhood days when most of my weekends were spent walking, making dens and climbing trees at Cannock Chase Forest in Staffordshire.
I used to spend the majority of my school holidays staying with my nan in Wolverhampton. My nan and I would go for endless walks along the local canals. We enjoyed many visits to Himley Hall and Kingswingford Railway where we would walk for miles, I still have fond memories now of my nan carrying her floral shopping bag filled with baps, fruit and cartons of juice. When I go over and visit her now I take her out with my girls and we often visit the places she used to take me. My girls really enjoy visiting places where I used to go as a young girl, it's great going back and making more memories with my girls and the other half of course!
Through my teenage years I didn't walk much as I was often out with friends and sadly not many teenagers have a love for walking.
In my early twenties I gave birth to my first daughter followed three years later by my second daughter, they're now aged 15 and 12 years. During their younger days we didn't do a great deal of walking but as they got older we spent many Sundays walking around local parks. Then before we knew it we were out walking around local country parks with my sister-in-law, her partner and their young daughter who was 2. We quickly started to build up our weekly average miles and started venturing to the Peak District, before we knew it we had a weeks holiday booked in the Lake District in April 2015 and our goal was Scafell Pike! Bearing in mind, my niece only turned 3 in the January!
So off we headed to the Lakes, for the first few days of our stay we didn't think we'd be able to get up Scafell Pike because of the recent bad weather. However, the weather changed in our favour so off we set. It took us three gruelling hours to reach the vast summit but, all seven of us completed the walk to the summit. The summit was covered in a light blanket of snow and the views were simply breathtaking. We didn't spend long at the summit because the wind was howling and even with 5 layers on we were freezing. We left the summit for what we thought was going to be an easy decent, how wrong were we?! Six hours later we finally arrived back at the car!!! My niece was carried all the way down because it was too much for her little legs but we all thoroughly enjoyed our first mountain summit.
From then onwards we have walked nearly every week, the majority of our walks are in the Peak District as it's on our doorstep. All of the kids love our walking adventures and we always make great memories on every walk. Our adventures are going to give the kids lots of stories to tell when they are older with their own families.
